I made this piece using A.I. That’s right. Analog Illustration. This year I am trying to make better use of my colored pencil set. Without the convenience of digital shortcuts (e.g. the color picker, fill bucket, and undo button), I have to be much more deliberate with my color choices, and each little object required layering color after color like my life depended on it. Hence, the longer-than-anticipated drought of new posts. That said, I think the end result is much more vibrant and energetic than I can ever achieve with digital.

I drew these four witch colleagues enjoying Korean BBQ (and each other’s company) after a hard day’s work of saving the world from mystical diseases and malicious demons, partly to use the full range of my colored pencil set1, but also because yes, these are characters from the “Doctor Lavender” fictional universe that I’ve intermittently worked on for years2; they’re not one-off original characters but in fact have names, backstories, personalities, and abilities that are being actively developed. Someday perhaps I’ll write more about them here. Until then, these drawings will be my way to continue exploring concepts and depicting scenes from the Lavenderverse.

1 One of my pet peeves is seeing certain colors get worn down to nibs while others are barely touched. That’s one reason why I don’t attempt color pencil art that often, unless I can use all or most of my entire set.

2 and that I eventually hope to turn into something bigger (like say a manga)
